L’autorità doganale gioca un ruolo strategico nell’applicazione degli accordi multilaterali ambientali (Multilateral Environmental Agreements– MEAs). I MEA sono accordi di diritto internazionale volti a proteggere l’ambiente (lotta all’esportazione, importazione e transito di rifiuti pericolosi, sostanze che aggrediscono l’ozono, o che contengono il mercurio), specie animali e vegetali considerate in pericolo oppure la qualità del lavoro relativo ad alcuni bene (conflict minerals, conflict oils e in futuro anche il lavoro nero).
